Hollywood Movie ‘Avatar,Director James Cameron Nominated for Oscars

“Avatar,” James Cameron’s 3-D adventure film, was nominated for nine Oscars, including best picture and director, as Hollywood pitted the world’s top- grossing picture against an expanded cast of lesser-knowns.

“The Hurt Locker,” by Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, also received nine nominations, including best movie and best director, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences said today at a news conference in Beverly Hills, California.

The best-picture category was expanded to 10 nominees this year, a decision designed to attract more viewers for the March 7 awards ceremony on Walt Disney Co.’s ABC. The show drew its biggest U.S. audience, 55.2 million, when Cameron’s “Titanic” won best picture and he was named best director in 1998, according to ratings data from Nielsen Co.

“We couldn’t be more excited to see as many popular films in there,” said Bill Mechanic, co-producer of this year’s Oscar telecast, said in an interview. “It’s an intersection of commerce and quality. It will be great for the show.”

Mechanic was chairman of News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox when the studio developed “Titanic.” He produced “Coraline,” a 3-D film nominated for best animated picture this year.

“Avatar,” also from Fox, has taken in more than $2 billion in global ticket sales, passing “Titanic,” with $1.84 billion, as the best-selling movie, according to Box Office Mojo, an industry researcher based in Sherman Oaks, California. source :Feb. 2 (Bloomberg.com)
